How I transitioned from fast fashion to slow fashion

Sustainable fashion isn’t always easy when you’re used to fast fashion. It’s true—brands like Shein, Zara, H&M, Forever 21, or Primark constantly release new collections at low prices, making it hard to resist. Let me tell you how I started my transition smoothly. And, to be honest, I’m not perfect either: I still give in sometimes. But that’s normal, especially in the beginning, and you shouldn’t feel guilty about it. The important thing is to become aware and move forward step by step. So, here are some tips to help you make the switch and find timeless, responsible pieces.

1. Uninstall fast fashion apps

It might sound simple, but it’s an effective first step. By removing the apps of these brands, you significantly reduce the temptation of impulsive shopping. Plus, this action forces you to look for more sustainable alternatives.

2. Explore second-hand apps

Turn to second-hand platforms. In Europe, Vinted is a great option. In the U.S. and Canada, try Poshmark, ThredUp, or Depop. These apps are full of high-quality, pre-loved clothing, often at much lower prices than in stores. Use filters to easily find your size, preferred colors, and favorite brands.

If you’re hesitant about second-hand clothing, know that you can find brand-new items with tags. We’ve all bought something we fell in love with but never wore. Buying these items, even if they’re from fast fashion brands, gives them a second life and prevents them from ending up in landfills, contributing to textile pollution.

3. Invest in timeless, durable pieces

To build a responsible wardrobe, focus on high-quality basics. Brands like Warp+Weft, Quince, or Reformation offer clothes made from sustainable materials under fair working conditions. Sure, the prices are higher, but it’s a long-term investment—better a few well-made, durable pieces than a closet full of low-quality items.

By the way, I’m preparing an article about my favorite brands, including the ones I’ve tried and those I’d love to discover. If you know of any great ones, please share them with me !

4. Sort through your wardrobe and give clothes a second life

When decluttering your wardrobe, avoid throwing clothes away. Here are some better options:

  • Sell them: Use Vinted, Poshmark, or Marketplace to clear out space and earn some extra cash.
  • Donate them: Many local charities accept gently used clothes for those in need.
  • Recycle them: If some items are too worn out, turn them into cleaning cloths or get creative with DIY projects. I’ll share some fun textile recycling ideas soon.

I hope these tips help you start your journey toward a more sustainable wardrobe, without pressure and at your own pace. If you have questions or tricks to share, drop me a comment—I’d love to hear your ideas! Together, we can change the way we consume fashion while staying stylish! 😉
